BACOLOD CITY – Thirty modern jeepneys were launched by the United Negros Transport Cooperative (UNETCO) here on Monday, Jan. 23.
UNETCO chairperson Romelie Soliguen, Richard Osmeña, director of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)-Western Visayas, and Nora Patron, director of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA)-Western Visayas, led the ribbon-cutting and launching of these modern jeepneys at the Central Hall of Ayala Malls Capitol Central.
These units will be deployed to six routes awarded by the Local Public Transport Route Plan (LPTRP) to UNETCO.
Sixteen units will be deployed to the route Shopping to Libertad to University of Saint La Salle (USLS), Shopping to Libertad to San Agustin and Handumanan to Mansilingan to Libertad, 18 units each; and the Tangub to South Capitol Road, Taculing to Central Market, and Banago to Libertad, 15 units each.
Five units each have been initially distributed for the six routes and a dry-run will be conducted this week.
The transport group is installing a fleet management system on their units to monitor routes and operations in the event that there are only 30 units available.
Mayor Alfredo Abelardo ‘’Albee’’ Benitez, represented by Councilor Psyche Marie Sy during the launching, said he fully supports the government’s transport modernization efforts.
“It is great to see more modernized jeepneys on the road,” Sy said, adding that it is time for Bacolod, a highly urbanized city, to be a model for clean and efficient transportation.
UNETCO procured a total of 97 Class 2 FAW Modernized Public Utility Vehicle (MPUV). The remaining 67 are expected to arrive soon.
Osmeña said the launching of these modern jeepneys delivers a strong signal of courage and decisiveness to those who opt to take the challenge of public transport.
“Slowly but surely, we are showing the public that our partnership among the local government, the transport operators, and our (LTFRB) office is strong and working tirelessly to make transport transferred into modernization reality.”
QSJ Visayas Manager Elmer Apondar, Huang Xi, general manager of FAW Philippines, and Maria Luisita Chiu, assistant vice president of the Landbank of the Philippines, turned over these modern jeepneys to the UNETCO Board of directors and its chairperson.
There are 203 modern jeepneys here and 155 more units will be launched by February, based on a report from the LTFRB.
UNETCO is composed of three transport federations here – the United Negros Drivers and Operators Center (UNDOC), Federation of Bacolod Drivers Association (FEBACDA), and Sentrong Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators Negros Occidental (SSTON) – and will soon operate a total of 293 modern jeepneys here.
