Wesley So fought world No. 2 Ding Liren of China to a draw after eight rounds of the Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023 in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands over the weekend.
The Cavite-born So split the point after 42 moves of a Caro-Kann Defense to remain in the title hunt at joint second with Dutch Anish Giri with five points on two wins and six draws.

So’s earlier victories came at the expense of German Vincent Keymer and Indian Dommaraju Gukesh.
Both So and Giri trailed 18-year-old Nodirbek Abdussattorov, who leads by a full point with six points that he highlighted with a shock win over reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen in the fifth round Thursday, Jan. 19.
So was playing India’s Parham Maghsoodloo in the ninth round at press time.
He is expected to have a loaded final four-round schedule as three of those are the tournament’s big guns in Giri, Carlsen, and Abdusattorov.
So will battle Indian young gun Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa in the 13th and final round.
