BACOLOD CITY – The City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) reported an 80 percent increase in leptospirosis cases in 2022.
Dr. Grace Tan, CESU head, said 45 cases, including 11 deaths, were recorded last year, compared to the 25 cases with six deaths in 2021.
The age range of patients was one to 68-years-old while the age group with the highest number of cases was 21 to 30-years-old.
Barangay Singcang-Airport listed four deaths while one fatality each was reported in Barangays Mandalagan, Bata, Cabug, Felisa, Taculing, Pahanocoy, and Estefania.
The case fatality rate or the number of people who died among those infected was 24.4 percent.
The CESU said the victims contracted the disease either by wading in contaminated water and forgoing consultation.
Barangay Singcang-Airport logged the highest number of cases with seven, followed by Barangays 1, 2, 11, 16, 36, 39, 40, Taculing, Villamonte, Alijis, Alangilan, Handumanan, Pahanocoy, Bata, Estefania, Sum-ag, Mandalagan, Tangub, Cabug, Felisa, Mansilingan, and Granada.
