BACOLOD CITY -- An elderly man, who was an alleged supporter of the New People’s Army (NPA), voluntarily surrendered to the authorities in Barangay Canlusong, E.B. Magalona, Negros Occidental on Friday, Jan. 20.
The identity of the 60-year-old man from Cadiz City was withheld.
He turned over a hand grenade and a .38 caliber revolver to the police and military.
Capt. Judesses Catalogo, spokesperson of Negros Occidental police, said on Sunday, Jan. 22, that the elderly man's intension to surrender was due to the localized peace engagement of the government forces.
Catalogo said that he was allegedly part of an organization considered by authorities as a legal front of the NPA.
The former NPA supporter will undergo screening to verify his identity and link with the NPA.
He will be assessed if he could avail the benefits from the government, Catalogo said.
