Cardinal Advincula cites importance of Christian unity

Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula cited the importance of unity among all Christian faiths.

Christendom observes the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity from Jan. 18 to 25 this year with the theme ‘Do Good. Seek Justice.’

Cardinal Advincula said the Catholic Church continues to hold dialogues with all Christian denominations as he cited the importance of unity and solidarity among all religious groups.

“The Church is inclusive. The Church is ecumenical. The Church is in dialogue with other faith traditions. The Church is in dialogue with the whole world. Our goal is Christian unity so that the world may believe,” said Cardinal Advincula over Radio Veritas.

His Eminence said all forms of violence and injustice particularly concerning the poor and neglected sectors of society must stop. He encouraged the faithful to live out the message of the Prophet Isaiah who said that there can only be justice if the world will set aside violence and hunger for power and wealth at the expense of the poor and the neglected sectors of society.

“Ours is an engagement and dialogue that is not limited to beautiful words alone. Ours is an engagement that dares to immerse itself in the stark reality of our world, a world that is wounded by injustice, sin and violence. We proclaim Christ crucified. We likewise proclaim the victory of the Risen Christ,” said Cardinal Advincula.

The Church leader said the observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity this year comes at a time when about 360 million people around the world are experiencing discrimination and persecution because of their faith.

The eight-day observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began in 1948 with the setting up of the World Council of Churches.
