The newly-completed P29 million flood mitigation structure in the coastal town of San Juan, La Union has provided protection to the millions of residents including tourists in the area known as the “Surfing Capital of Northern Philippines,” the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Saturday, Jan. 21.
DPWH Region 1 Director Ronnel M. Tan said that the seawall project was built in Barangay Taboc, San Juan, La Union to shield the local residents from the strong waves during torrential downpours and severe weather conditions.
Implemented by DPWH La Union First District Engineering Office (DEO), Tan said the project involved the construction of a 155-meter wall funded under the 2022 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
He added that solar street lights were also installed, providing safer and more convenient access for surfers and residents visiting the shore.
