55 soldiers, cops involved in Negros clash with NPA rebels get medals
BACOLOD CITY -- The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (ID) awarded 55 soldiers and policemen with medals for their bravery during a clash in Barangay Carabalan, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on Jan. 9, that resulted into the death of a New People’s Army (NPA) member.
Major Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 3ID commander, pinned the Military Merit Medal to 45 personnel of the 94th Infantry Battalion (IB) and 10 personnel of the 2nd Negros Occidental Police Mobile Force Company, in rites held during his visit at the 94th IB headquarters in Barangay Tambo, Ayungon, Negros Oriental on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
The firefight, the first to be reported this year, also resulted in the recovery of some firearms and ammunition.
In his message, Arevalo said the awards will serve as an inspiration to the (Spearhead) troopers to give their best and continue their commitment and dedication to achieve just and lasting peace not only in Negros island but also in Western and Central Visayas.
Last year, the 94th IB and the 62nd IB clashed with NPA rebels in a series of encounters in Barangay Carabalan in October, wherein an NPA leader and two other rebels were killed.
