The breakdown of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP)'s old Air Traffic Management (ATM) system plus its backup on New Year's day affected 244 flights and 24,000 passengers of the Philippine Airlines PAL Group alone.
The 244 flights affected comprise 60 percent of PAL's total scheduled flights on Monday, January 1, 2023, the flag carrier announced Tuesday, January 2.

The cancellations covered the period from mid morning (past 10AM) up to 5PM.
From 5PM onwards, flights departed on a delayed status up to 2AM Jan 2.
"Today, we are focusing on recovery flight operations into the Manila hub," according to PAL sokesperson Cielo Villaluna.
"These are the planes and the passengers stranded in various international and domestic outstations," she explained.
"We aim to complete the return of these flights to the Manila hub within the day."
However, this creates a domino effect, in the form of flight delays for today's flights as these planes are being asigned for flight duty today, she maintained.
"We could not fly back our planes yesterday even with re-start of airport operations at 4PM because flight arrivals are limited to 15 arrivals per hour," Villaluna pointed out.
