Miss Universe 2022 R'Bonney Gabriel begins reign in New York

R'Bonney Gabriel has arrived at her home in New York City where she will fulfill her reign and duties as Miss Universe 2022.

Gabriel, 28, kicked off her media week in the Big Apple with a guest appearance on the popular morning show "Good Morning America."

She is the first Miss USA to win in 10 years. She is also the first Filipino-American beauty queen to win Miss Universe.

“Filipinos are so happy. They are just over the moon about it. It’s a huge win for the community and representation. It’s an honor,” said Gabriel when asked about being part of the Filipino community during an interview on GMA.

Gabriel also maintained that she really wanted to increase the age limit a bit in joining Miss Universe.

"It's the first thing that came to mind because I'm 28 and that's the oldest age to compete," answered Gabriel, when asked why she focused on the age limit.

She added: "I think women, our age is always objectified, and people think sometimes, we're too old to do things. I had people telling me that I started late in pageantry and I just said my favorite quote 'if not now then when?' You should never feel like you're too late. You should go for it."

During the finals of the 71st Miss Universe Competition in New Orleans, Louisiana on Jan. 14 (Jan. 15 in Manilla), Gabriel was asked: "Miss Universe made an inclusive change allowing mothers and married women to compete this year. What's another change you would like to see and why?"

Gabriel answered: "For me I would like to see an age increase because I am 28 years old and that is the oldest age you compete. And I think it's a beautiful thing. My favorite quote is 'if not now then when?' Because as a woman, I believe age doesn't define us. It's not tomorrow, it's not yesterday, but it's now. The time is now that you can go after what you want."

The beauty queen from Texas also said that she will use fashion as a force for good.

"Absolutely, I'm going to use fashion as a force for good. I'm always looking for ways to do good in my industry whether I'm sewing classes or providing learning opportunities or raising awareness on sustainability in the industry," she said.

The fashion designer also said that she created an original outfit that would match her crown for her appearance on "GMA."

Asked if the crown was heavy, Gabriel laughed and said: "It's not that heavy, actually."

Apart from New York, Thailand will also become the second home for Gabriel this year.

The JKN Global Group, a Thai-owned media and content conglomerate owned by Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip, new owner of Miss Universe Organization, is based in Thailand.

Gabriel and her court are expected to fly to Thailand in the coming weeks for special pageant activities.

The 72nd Miss Universe Competition will be held in El Salvador in December.
