Magnitude 4.8 quake rocks Camarines Norte — Phivolcs

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Camarines Norte and neighboring areas on Tuesday morning, Jan. 17, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake struck 12 kilometers southeast of Tinaga Island, Vinzons, Camarines Norte around 5:57 a.m.

It said the earthquake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Mercedes, Camarines Norte; Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Guinayangan and Tagkawayan, Quezon; Intensity III (weak) in Buenavista and Lopez in Quezon and Naga City in Camarines Sur; and Intensity II (slightly felt) in Catanauan and San Narciso in Quezon.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity V in Daet, Camarines Norte; Intensity III in Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte, City of Iriga and Ragay in Camarines Sur, and San Roque in Northern Samar; Intensity II in Alabat, Guinayangan, Gumaca, Infanta, Mauban, and Mulanay in Quezon and Pasacao and Pili in Camarines Sur; and Intensity I in Marikina City, Pasig City, Pulilan in Bulacan, Calauag in Quezon, and Taytay in Rizal.

It said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
