Scattered light to occasional heavy rains may persist in parts of southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas because of the prevalence of a low pressure area (LPA) east of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

In its 11 a.m. weather advisory, PAGASA estimated the location of the LPA at 55 kilometers east-southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

Although there is still little chance of the LPA becoming a tropical depression within 48 hours, PAGASA said the weather disturbance may continue to bring rains over some parts of Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas in the next 24 hours.

“The LPA will bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region, and Quezon,” PAGASA said.

“Under these condition, flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in areas with significant antecedent rainfall,” the State weather bureau warned.

PAGASA advised the public and concerned disaster risk reduction and management offices to take all necessary precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, Batanes, Cagayan, and Apayao may experience cloudy and rainy weather due to the northeast monsoon or “amihan.”

Floods or landslides are likely due to moderate to heavy monsoon rains in these areas, PAGASA said.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with light amihan rains, while the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
