CARMONA, Cavite – With its goal of becoming a full-fledged smart city in the coming years, the local government unit (LGU) is looking back at its past with a book project focused on local history.

On Monday, Jan. 16, the municipal government, led by Mayor Dahlia A. Loyola, signed a contract with National Historical Commission of the Philippines Commissioner Emmanuel F. Calairo, Ph.D., who will author a book about Carmona's history and culture.
The history book is scheduled to be completed by 2024. It is also set to be developed into a coffee table book by 2025, in time for Sorteo Festival – a communal raffle draw celebrated every three years.
It takes a town to uncover history
The history book will cover various phases of Carmona's history since it was first established as a separate town from Silang during the Spanish occupation.
"The goal, mailagay sa mapa ang Carmona. Very historical ang Cavite as a whole, pero parang hindi tayo nababanggit, so magkakaroon ng extensive research with the help of Dr. Calairo (The goal is to put Carmona on the map. Cavite is very historical as a whole, but we are not mentioned, so there will be an extensive research with the help of Dr. Calairo)," Municipal Information, Tourism, Culture and Arts Office (MITCAO) Head Jose Paolo D. Diaz told the Manila Bulletin.

The LGU is calling on its residents to share memorabilia that could contribute information, including old photos and documents. MITCAO is also working out a process to get crowdsourced historical materials digitally.
"Isa sa participation din ng mga mamayan ay 'yung oral history. 'Yung kwento ng mga lolo o lola (One other way residents can participate is through oral history. The stories of grandfathers or grandmothers)," Diaz added.
Truth vs myths
MITCAO is excited about the historical facts that the book project will uncover, especially since there have always been local myths that have not been verified through research.
"Totoo bang dumaan dito si Rizal, dahil katabi lang natin ang Biñan? Talaga bang pumunta dito si Emilio Aguinaldo at may lusutan daw ang kanyang karwahe dito sa simbahan? These are oral histories na hindi babalewalain, pero hahanap tayo ng pruweba through research (Did Rizal pass by Carmona since it is just beside Biñan? Did Emilio Aguinaldo really go here and was there a tunnel in our church for his carriage?)," Diaz said.

Besides the historical figures who frequented the town, the LGU is also looking forward to discovering local heroes in the process.
"Wala pa tayong kilalang local heroes eh, 'di katulad sa Bacoor, Trece Martires (we do not know any local heroes yet, unlike Bacoor, Trece Martires)," Diaz remarked.
"Of course, before you move forward, kailangan mo ring balikan ang nakaraan (you also need to look back at the past). It is also to inspire the younger generation."
