Scattered rain showers persist in parts of southern Luzon due to LPA, shear line

The low pressure area (LPA) and shear line may continue to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over parts of southern Luzon in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday afternoon, Jan. 16.
PAGASA said the LPA was last spotted at a distance of 180 kilometers (km) east-northeast of Surigao City or 245 km east of Maasin City.
It continues to warn those in areas directly affected by the LPA to remain vigilant against possible flooding or landslides during moderate to heavy rains.
The combined effect of the LPA and shear line—a boundary line where the cold and warm air meets—may cause light to heavy rain showers over Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Albay, and Quezon.
Other areas that experienced heavy rains caused by the LPA in the past few days may experience improved weather.
PAGASA said the northeast monsoon, locally called “amihan,” may bring cloudy and rainy weather over Batanes, Cagayan, and Apayao.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon may experience partly cloudy to cloudy weather with light amihan rains.
The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina on Monday morning said that the LPA may dissipate within 48 hours.
