There were 279 new people infected with the Covid-19 virus in the country, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Sunday, Jan. 15.

The new cases brought the tally of confirmed infections since 2020 to 4,070,287. Of this figure, 12,143 remain active or still recuperating from this viral disease.

Metro Manila remained on the top spot with the most infections in recent two weeks with 1,761.

Next was Calabarzon with 895 cases followed by Central Luzon with 458, Cagayan Valley with 380, and Western Visayas with 304.

Most of the country's confirmed cases managed to survive with 3,992,554 recoveries. However, the Philippines also logged 65,590 fatalities since the pandemic began two years ago.

The DOH, meanwhile, highlighted the importance of Covid-19 vaccination.

"Ongoing vaccine deployment has also mitigated the negative impact of new variants by reducing risk for more severe disease, especially among the vulnerable populations," it said.
