Bacolod gears up for Bacolaodiat Festival after two-year hiatus

BACOLOD CITY -- The city government here has allocated P3 million worth of financial assistance for the celebration of this year’s Bacolaodiat Festival.

This was disclosed by Jennifer Gochangco-Ong, one of the board members of the Bacolaodiat Festival organizing committee, in a recent press briefing at the Bacolod City Government Center.

“The budget will definitely go a long way in making this festival very festive,” said Ong.

Set Jan. 20 to Jan. 22, the 18th Bacolaodiat Festival highlights the Year of the Rabbit, which is believed to offer opportunities for contemplation, rest and nurturing of body and soul.

The Bacolaodiat Festival was suspended for two years due to the pandemic.

Bacolaodiat Festival Chairman John Stephen Sy said he is optimistic and hopeful that the comeback of the festival this year will be more vibrant, happier, and meaningful to everyone considering that ‘we are easing out of the pandemic.’

A dazzling grand parade from Megaworld’s The Upper East toward the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) will kick off the festivities on Jan. 20. It will be followed by the Ceremonial Lighting of Lanterns and Lotus, and the anticipated Sparkling Symphony of Lights (Fireworks) which will take place after the cultural show at the BCGC.

The Imperial Village and the Chopsticks Alley, which will feature Chinese cuisines and Filipino street food favorites, will also open at The Upper East.

The Lantern Street Dance competition is scheduled on Jan. 21 and winners will be awarded on Jan. 22 at SM City Bacolod, which is another festival site.

The Dharma Prayer at the Yuan Thong Temple will happen at 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 21, the eve of the Chinese New Year.

Other activities lined up include the Lunar Music Festival, Mascot Parade, and Falcor Marketing Corporation’s Dog Fashion Show at the BCGC.

Megaworld chief strategy officer Kevin Tan is expected to grace the occasion, according to Ong.

Meanwhile, Mayor Alfredo Abelardo ‘Albee’ Benitez said he is hoping that this celebration will bring back the confidence of the people to start moving around, doing their normal chores.

“I hope this will be the start of the year in which we’ll start moving and move on,” said Benitez.

He is also hoping that this would be the start of better years to come, and good luck for everyone.
