Gov't has made 'serious progress' in agriculture sector — Marcos
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. believes that the government has made "some very serious progress" since he assumed the role of being the Department of Agriculture (DA) secretary.
In a recent interview with China's state-run news channel CGTN, Marcos said the government "was very worried" that there would be some "severe shortages" in food supply and an increase of food prices.
But he added that the government has "been able to lessen that" although "there is still a very high inflation rate."
"Much of that is imported, so we're trying to reduce our importation," he added.
Marcos made the pronouncement even as there is currently a shortage of onions that is causing its price to surpass that of the meat, as well as a high inflation rate.
Meanwhile, Marcos said he felt it necessary for him to head the DA because the situation of the Philippine agriculture "was quite severe."
He believed it is only the President that "can really get things going" and the only one in the government "nobody can say no to."
"Having the president also carry the title and position of agriculture would make things move much quicker," Marcos said.
