Filipino designs reign supreme at Miss Universe 2022 preliminary and national costume competitions

The coronation night of the 71st Miss Universe pageant hasn't started yet but it looks like the Philippines already won thanks to the works of Filipino fashion creatives that graced the stage of the pageant’s preliminary and national costume competitions. Below are the pieces made by Filipino designers worn by this year’s candidates.

Evening gown competition

Miss Bahrain in Furne Amato

Evlin Abdulla Khalifa wowed the crowd wearing a metallic hooded long gown by Dubai-based fashion designer Furne Amato.

Miss Cambodia in Rian Fernandez

Rian Fernandez’s creation for Cambodia’s Manita Hang depicts the intertwined branches of the historical banyan tree. Its purple and blue colors represent royalty and serenity.

Noky Simbani was a Boss Barbie wearing a custom pink crystal-embellished halter gown by Louis Pangilinan.

Evlin’s national costume by Furne was an ode to the golden celebration of Bahrain’s establishment as a nation.

Carl’s costume for Alexandrine was inspired by Mauritius’ national flower, the Trochetia Boutoniana.

Miss Philippines in Oliver Tolentino

Celeste channeled Filipino superheroine Darna with a costume designed by Oliver adorned with a headpiece and metal accessories by Jerome Navarro.

Patrick Isorena paid homage to the 1969 moon landing with his national costume for R’Bonney.

The 71st Miss Universe coronation night will take place on Jan. 14, 2023 (Jan. 15, 9 a.m. in the Philippines), at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Last year’s winner, India’s Harnaaz Sandhu, will crown her successor by the end of the event.
