Valenzuela gov't reminds motorists to obey traffic rules

The Valenzuela City government on Wednesday, Jan. 11, reminded the motorists in the city to obey traffic rules and to properly communicate with traffic enforcers in case they are asked to stop while on the road.

The reminder followed an incident on Nov. 23, 2022 where a delivery truck driver hit two traffic enforcers with a steel pipe after his vehicle was flagged down along Mindanao Avenue in the city. A video of the incident went viral on social media this month.

In the video, the driver, identified as Felix Claro Divina Gracia Jr., was seen hitting the right leg of the traffic enforcer, Aljeen Barrera, with a steel pipe.

Barrera fell to the ground during the scuffle but still managed to take the pipe from the driver who rode his truck and escaped.

The Valenzuela City Police Station (VCPS) said that the day before the incident, traffic enforcers on the said thoroughfare tried to apprehend the suspect for illegal parking, but he managed to flee.

On Nov. 23, the suspect went back to Mindanao Avenue onboard his truck. Armed with a lead pipe, he alighted from the vehicle and suddenly hit Juleto Listana, a traffic enforcer, inside a tow truck before beating Barrera who was apprehending another traffic violator.

VCPS said that the driver was arrested after he was positively identified by the two traffic enforcers when he went to the police station to file a police report for the damages his vehicle incurred.

The traffic enforcers were also in the police office reporting the incident to the authorities.

The driver was charged with two counts of direct assault before the Valenzuela City Metropolitan Trial Court. However, he was released from police custody after posting bail amounting to P72,000.

The city government said the case is still being heard in court.

Valenzuela City Transportation Office officer-in-charge Jay Valenzuela urged the motorists to follow traffic rules and regulations implemented in the city.

“May mga remedies naman po tayo kung may problema po sa violation, pwede n’yo po i-contest para ma-resolve ang problema. Huwag po natin daanin sa karahasan (We have remedies if there is a problem with the violation, you can contest it to solve the problem. Let us not resort to violence),” he said.

“Anumang pananakit o karahasan sa ating mga kawani ay hindi palalampasin ng Pamahalaang Lungsod (Any harm or violence to our staff will not be tolerated by the City Government),” the local government said.
