Public urged to take alternative routes as Markina Bridge undergoes repair

The Department of Public Works and-National Capital Region (DPWH-NCR) urged motorists on Wednesday, Jan. 11, to either take alternate routes or observe precautions while passing the Marikina River bridge which is currently under repair.

DPWH-NCR Director Loreta Malaluan said the bridge is under repair in order to ensure the safety of the motorists and the commuters.

Malaluan said that traffic safety devices with warning/informative signages were installed in the rightmost lane of the bridge approach in the direction going to Cubao, Quezon City and cordoned off the part of the sidewalk.

“DPWH-NCR also immediately conducted shoring and sand filling activities on the affected part of the bridge approach,’’ Malaluan said.

“As part of the drainage project, permanent steel sheet piles with lateral support were installed alongside the retaining wall of the bridge, prior to excavation works to prevent movement of soil/embankment and adjacent structures,’’ she added.

In a GMA News report, cracks that stretched several meters along the edge of Markina Bridge were noticed during the continuous heavy rains last week.

The sidewalk part of the ramp of the Marikina Bridge going to Quezon City has been cordoned off.
