Senate Minority Leader Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III on Tuesday, January 10 said he does not see any problem with newly appointed Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Carlito G. Galvez Jr, being confirmed by the powerful Commission on Appointments (CA).
"The record of General / Secretary Galvez as a military man is solid," Pimentel said.
Galvez was named DND chief after President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. accepted the resignation of DND Officer in Charge Undersecretary Jose Faustino Jr.
"The only thing which can be raised against him is related to Covid-19 which is not related to the DND functions," Pimentel said.
Gálvez served as chief implementer of then President Duterte’s Covid-19 Task Force.
"Also, I believe our AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) is already a mature and disciplined organization. Hence, it will not and should not be 'destabilized' by the issue of personnel movement and promotions,’’ Pimentel pointed out.
"The AFP is larger than the sum total of its personnel," he added.
Sen. Christopher "Bong" Go also welcomed Galvez's appointment as new defense secretary.
"Given his vast experience as a seasoned soldier and Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity, he will sure make significant contributions to the success of the administration of President Marcos Jr.," Go said in a statement.
"I can also attest to his ability in crisis management. His composure was shown when he stayed very calm under pressure in his stint in the Western Mindanao Command during the Marawi siege," he pointed out.
Moreover, Go said his recent stint as the country's vaccine czar, where he successfully managed the crucial period of the government's nationwide Covid-19 vaccination and pandemic response efforts, eventually led to the reopening of the Philippine economy.
"(What) we are experiencing now prove that, apart from being an outstanding soldier, Gen. Galvez also possesses the necessary management and leadership skills in serving the people and defending the interests of our country," Go said.
For his part, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada echoed Pimentel's hope that Galvez will eventually be nominated for confirmation before the CA to allow him to fully discharge his functions and responsibilities, not just in an acting capacity.
"This move by the President, hopefully, will somehow give a sense of stability insofar as the leadership in the DND and its attached agencies/organizations are concerned," Estrada said.
Estrada also said he hopes Galvez's appointment, which came three days after the designation of Gen. Andres Centino as Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff, would put to rest talks of unrest among the major service branches of the AFP.
