President Marcos has commended Philippine government agencies and Kuwaiti authorities for their pursuit of justice for slain overseas Filipino worker Jullebee Ranara.
Marcos, who is currently in Singapore, made the statement following the conviction of Ranara's killer— 17-year-old Turki Ayed Al-Azmi.
"I commend the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and the Kuwaiti Authorities for their continued pursuit of justice for our OFW (overseas Filipino worker), Jullebee Ranara," he said on his social media pages Friday, Sept. 15.
"We hope that the appeal process will be conducted fairly, and justice will be served accordingly," he added.
The convicted killer, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), has 30 days to appeal his conviction to the Court of First Instance.
The President said the development brought him comfort that both Ranara and late DMW Secretary Susan "Toots" Ople "are looking down from heaven with smiles."
"I take comfort in thinking that Toots and Jullebee are looking down from heaven with smiles," he said.
"Their legacy serves as a reminder of our duty to protect and support our fellow countrymen, regardless of where in the world they may be," he added.
On Thursday night, the DFA disclosed that the Juvenile Court of Kuwait sentenced Turki Ayed Al-Azmi to 15 years of imprisonment for the murder of Ranara.
Ranara, a 34-year-old OFW, was raped, killed, and burned. Her body was found burned in a desert near Al-Salmi Road on Jan. 21, 2023.
