The City Council of Manila announced on Thursday, July 6, that it will standardize the fare matrix for tri-wheels in the city.
Under Ordinance No. 8391, passengers will have to pay P16 as a base fare for the first kilometer.
On every 500 meters, P5 will be added on its base fare.
The city council along with the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) and Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Association (TODA) passed the ordinance on second reading last July 4.
The city government said MTPB and TODA had already attended four hearings prior to the second reading.
During the four hearings, the MTPB and TODA agreed on the tri-wheel fare rates in the city.
Tri-wheels include regular tricycles, pedicabs, and electric tricycles.
First District Councilor Jesus "Taga" Fajardo, Jr., chairman of the council's transportation committee, filed the ordinance after the local government learned that there is no standard fare matrix for tri-wheels.
"This ordinance will be of great help in creating a more orderly, liveable and lovable City of Manila, as what we all aim for," said Fajardo.
He said the regulation will also discipline all tri-wheel service providers and penalize abusive drivers who overcharge their customers.Â
