For its April issue, Vogue Philippines sheds a light on the country’s age-old tattoo heritage by putting Kalinga’s Apo Whang-Od on its cover. As a result, the Filipino fashion magazine makes history by having “Vogue's oldest ever cover model,” as reported by [CNN](https://edition.cnn.com/style/article/vogue-philippines-april-cover-intl-scli/index.html).
Vogue Philippines’ Beauty issue cover, photographed by Artu Nepomuceno, is groundbreaking on so many levels that the international scene can’t help but express how powerful it is. Among them was Hollywood actress Halle Berry. The “Catwoman” star posted the image on her [Instagram account](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cqf9tcWOVrs/) with a caption that read, “Not this is real beauty.” In the comment section, actor Mario Lopez, stylist Law Roach, and supermodel Naomi Campbell join in praising the cover.

American makeup artist Bobbi Brown also shared her thoughts bout Vogue Philippines’ latest cover star. In a [caption](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cqkp4poOdqn/), she described the cover as a “stunning image.” “Beauty doesn’t have an expectation date,” Bobbi added. “She is 106 years old. I love every lived line in her face. And how great she looks in a red lipstick. Her faded body art makes her so interesting. Love to know how she lived her life. I love a life story.” After being posted on the Instagram page of Diet Prada, more international fashion industry professionals and creatives, like photographer Nigel Barker, supermodel Linda Evangelista, and fashion historian Cassidy Zachary, among others, chime in to say how statement-making the cover is.
At the age of 106, Apo Whang-Od is known as Kalinga’s oldest living tattoo artist who continues to practice and teach the art of “batok,” a traditional way of tattooing that uses bamboo sticks, thorns, and charcoal powder.
