The Manila City Library (MCL) conducted its Digital Literacy Program for 111 female senior citizens in the city on Thursday, March 9, in celebration of National Women's Month.
Digital Literacy Program is a two-hour training session conducted to introduce senior citizens to internet, smartphone, and computer use. The elderly were also guided in signing up for their Facebook and Google accounts.
The training was simultaneously held in four MCL branches in the city, including Arsenio H. Lacson Public Library in Calderon, Sta Ana; Bacood Public Library in Mag Araullo, Santa Mesa; Dapitan Public Library in Instruccion St., Sampaloc; and Manila-Sacramento Friendship Library in Zamora St., Paco.
According to MCL Director Mylene Villanueva, they will continue assisting and educating the elderly about modern gadgets use even beyond the training program.
She said the program was driven by the theme "DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality," and was also conducted in commemoration of the 64th Public Library Day with the theme "Investing in Public Libraries is Investing in People's Lives."
She added that the participants also learned about online applications for birth certificates and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance through government websites.
