TAYABAS CITY, Quezon – For Senator Imee Marcos the idea of amending the constitution is not appropriate in this time when there are many urgent matters that must be prioritized. In an interview on Friday, March 10, during Buntis Day celebration in St. Jude Hotel in this city where she was the guest of honor, the senator revealed that the Senate is in agreement with President Marcos Jr. who had said he too is not keen on the idea of charter change. Senator Marcos said that 'even though we know that it is necessary to change many provisions in the constitution,' the truth, she said, is “it is untimely.” She stressed that instead of prioritizing the charter change (cha-cha), there are urgent matters which the Senate should focus on, like job problems, inflation, and rising prices of basic commodities. The Ilocos Norte lawmaker also added that what she fears is that the issue might be used as a sort of diversion by legislators. "But I think there will also be an opportunity to talk about it as soon as possible, and first resolve the serious problem that is being faced now, the food shortage is really very urgent, issues like peace and order, the assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, and other killings involving politicians,” said Senator Marcos. “We need to focus on that first, although in fact there are many people who want to change the constitution,” she said. When asked about the rumors involving the leadership of Senate President Miguel Zubiri, she strongly denied them. “Sangkatutak na Marites yun, walang gulo sa Senado,” she said. “In fact, there are many priority bills of the administration, we all have our own advocacy and now we are focusing on land reform, I'm focusing on that because it's my number 1 bill, all the debts will be forgiven and the remaining debts will be condoned to our land reform beneficiaries,” she explained, adding ‘it’s been 50 years now since the P.D 27 was implemented.’
