Pasig City kicks-off National Women's Month with tiangge launch

A "tiangge" or market where women entrepreneurs can showcase their products kicked off the Pasig City local government's celebration of National Women's Month.

The open-air market called "Tiangge ni Mutya ng Pasig" is spearheaded by the city's Gender and Development Office, Pasig City Local Council of Women, and Office of Councilor and GAD Committee Chairperson Corie Raymundo.

The "tiangge" features over 35 stalls of different women's organizations selling their own produce such as food and other delicacies, as well as clothing and apparel.

The open-air market is located at the quadrangle of the city hall and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until March 11, Saturday.

"Nakakatuwa po na sa ating lungsod ay napakaaktibo ng mga kababaihan at sana ay patuloy po nating itaguyod ang isang lipunan kung saan ay may gender equality, kung saan inclusibo po tayo, at patuloy po nating itaguyod ang karapatan ng mga kababaihan (It is heartwarming to know that the women in our city are very active in community-building. This is why we should strive to provide them with a society that has gender equality, inclusivity. We should all do our part to protect the rights of women)," Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto said.

According to the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), the Women’s Month Celebration has  served as a venue to highlight women’s achievements and discuss continuing and emerging women’s empowerment and gender equality issues and concerns, challenges, and commitments.

It added that the celebration focuses on concrete activities that are aligned with national and international instruments and treaties such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Beijing Platform for Action, the Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development (1995-2025), the Framework Plan for Women, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

On March 17, 1988, Former President Corazon Aquino signed Proclamation No. 227, Series of 1988, or "Providing for the observance of the Month of March as ‘Women’s Role in History Month'" emphasizing the role of Filipino women in the social, cultural, economic and political development throughout history.

It provided for a month-long nationwide observance with appropriate ceremonies and activities to be spearheaded by the Commission.
