Amid a spate of political killings, gun-shy senators are now buying guns. This was revealed today, Wednesday, March 8 by Sen. Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa who said he has advised his colleagues to practice in the firing range to get a feel of possessing a firearm and eventually be ready for any eventuality. Dela Rosa, a former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, strongly suggested to fellow senators to strengthen their security. Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva had said senators are now edgy following a series of political killings, the latest of which the assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo last Saturday. Degamo was attending to his constituents when heavily armed men barged into his house and sprayed them with bullets. Degamo and others died. Dela Rosa said if a governor could be assassinated right in his own house, assassins could do it to anybody, including senators whose constituency is the whole country. His Senate public order and dangerous drugs committee has been tasked by the Senate leadership to conduct a hearing on the series of political killings. ’’It is imperative for leaders like us to double check our security,’’ Villanueva said, adding that senators are concerned.
