Where Danny Kingad sits in the loaded flyweight rankings

Danny “The King” Kingad pushed himself back to World Title relevance following an impressive victory over Eko Roni Saputra last Saturday, Feb. 25, at ONE Fight Night 7: Lineker vs. Andrade II.

Kingad showcased his ever-improving skill set by dominating the Indonesian wherever the match went. He out-wrestled, out-grappled, and out-stuck him from the get-go en route to a comfortable unanimous decision victory. 

With the win, “The King” also broke Saputra’s impressive seven-fight winning streak and kept a stronghold on his number three position in the rankings. 

But where does the win put him in his quest for another World Title shot? Let’s take a look. 

Kingad has to wait for the four men competing at ONE Fight Night 10: Johnson vs. Moraes III on 6 May to see what’s next for him. 

At that event, the true divisional king will be named when ONE Flyweight World Champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes put a lid on their trilogy. 

Interestingly, also on the card is the clash between the #2-ranked Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov and #4-ranked Reece “Lightning” McLaren in what looks like a World Title eliminator given how the two men have been performing in the ONE Circle as of late. 

Kingad has faced all of these guys, with the Filipino losing to the protagonists in the main event and Akhemtov but beating McLaren.

An impressive victory for either Akhmetov or McLaren could put them up for a World Title showdown with whoever wins in the main event. 

The loser, though, could be Kingad’s ticket to World Title contention again. 

“The King” faced Moraes back in 2017 as a young, wide-eyed fighter, and the Brazilian quickly took advantage of that by submitting him in the first round. He had a better showing in his fight against Johnson, although he eventually lost via decision in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Final. 

Should he face either of the two, not only will he get the chance to avenge one of his losses, he’ll also come close to the World Title shot that has eluded him since losing to Moraes six years ago. 

That said, he could always go after Gurdarshan “Saint Lion” Mangat, who he was supposed to face last December before an injury to the Indian-Canadian scrapped those plans. 

Either way, the future looks busy for Kingad, and 2023 could be the perfect time for him to make a move toward the ONE Flyweight World Title.
