Song Kang emotional in first Manila fan meet

Korean actor Song Kang never thought he was going to cry during his first fan meeting in Manila at the Araneta Coliseum on March 5.

Asked about how he feels about all the love from his fans, the 28-year-old Song Kang could not help but turn emotional, it took him a few minutes to reply.

Amid screams from young fans, he then said in Korean: “I am filming (a show) now, but I am here to see you on my day off when I don’t have any shows scheduled. I really did not think I am going to cry. I am really surprised. I am always thankful for all your support. I hope you can all be happy, and you can all be healthy. I am so honored.”

Popularly known as “Son of Netflix” because most of his series are aired on the platform, revealed that he was inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio to become an actor after watching “Titanic”.

To keep fit, he said, “I do weight training religiously. I also eat a lot of chicken breast.” His comfort food is tonkatsu or pork cutlets but these days he has been eating more salads, vegetables, and beef minus the fat.

Standing at 184 cm (6 feet), his light frame was perfect for the role of a ballet dancer in “Navillera”. Song Kang trained for the role for three months. “The hardest part was doing the turns,” he said.

Fitness is something Song Kang could not live without. He is an expert in Kendo, a modern Japanese martial art that uses bamboo swords (shinai). He has also dabbled in tennis, and Pilates.

As a young boy, he revealed he had his share of mischief. He once emptied all the toothpaste at home just to see how they would look like. Growing up, however, he had learned to become serious. He was once a classmate of Jin of BTS.

Asked what his advice to his young fans who want to give up on their dreams, he said: “Try many different things. Life is short. Try to be more adventurous. You will eventually find the thing that you like.” - Contributed by Andres Requintina
