The foreign affairs ministers of the Philippines and Malaysia will sit down and discuss both countries' overlapping claims on Sabah, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said. Marcos said this following Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Manila last week. In his most recent vlog, the President said that he discussed with Anwar the issue of Sabah during their talks in Malacañang on Wednesday, March 1. "Napag-usapan din namin ang issue ng Sabah. alam niyo naman meron tayong claim diyan na sinasabi natin nasa Pilipinas 'yan (We also talked about the issue of Sabah. You know that we have claim over that. We say that that's ours)," Marcos said. "Sabi namin, kailangan nating pag-usapan nang masinsinan 'yan. Yung mga foreign affairs secretary namin ay mag-uusap tungkol diyan kung ano pa ang pwede nating gawin (We said we have to discuss this thoroughly. Our foreign affairs secretaries would talk about what else we can do)," he added. Sabah is located east of Malaysia's northern Borneo and southwest of the Philippines' Sulu. The Philippines claims Sabah as part of its territory following an 1878 land lease agreement between the Sultanate of Sulu and the British North Borneo Chartered Co. In 1968, the President's father, the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, said the Philippines would pursue any peaceful means to stake its claim over Sabah. In an interview with ANC's "Headstart" this week, Prime Minister Anwar suggested letting the issue "rest for a while," saying the Philippines and Malaysia have many things in common for them to start antagonizing each other. Despite this dispute, the relationship between the Philippines and Malaysia remains warm. In his vlog, President Marcos described the two Asian countries as "partners." "Sabi namin kailangan magka-partner tayo dahil pareho ang sitwasyon natin (We said we are partners because of how similar our situations are)," he said.
