Pasig LGU, Special Olympics PH ink MOU on sports program for people with special needs

The Pasig City local government signed on Friday, March 3, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Special Olympics Pilipinas to implement a more inclusive sports program, particularly for people with special needs or developmental disabilities. Through the MOU, the local government and Special Olympics PH will cooperate to offer and provide sports programs and activities catered to people with special needs that will benefit their personal and social development. Pasig City will also host sports events, led by the NGO, and provide venues for competition, training, and education for their athletes. "Choose to include everyday and in every way," said Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto on his social media page. As a global non-government organization (NGO), Special Olympics advocates for equal opportunities for all in the field of sports. Volunteers and NGO leaders offer annual sports training and “athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports” for both children and adults with intellectual disabilities. “Those activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship,” the NGO said. According to their country fact sheet, the official sports included in Special Olympics Pilipinas are athletics, aquatics, basketball, bocce, and football. They also offer other development programs such as athlete and youth leadership programs, family support network, healthy athletes, unified schools, and young athletes. Last November 2022, Barangay San Antonio (BSA) served as the pilot barangay in Pasig that implemented a Young Athletes Program for children with special needs aged two to seven, in partnership with Special Olympics PH. The gathering was spearheaded by the BSA Child Development Center or Day Care Center. The young athletes program was part of the barangay’s Children's Access to Response Evaluation (CARE) initiative.
