Education is one of the keys to combat poverty, an official of the Caritas Manila said.
The humanitarian arm of the Archdiocese of Manila believes that education is a way to end the cycle of poverty, said Caritas Manila Executive Director Fr. Anton CT Pascual.
“At Caritas Manila, we strongly believe in the effectiveness of education in alleviating and eradicating poverty,” said Pascual in an interview over Church-run Radyo Veritas.
Pascual said that Caritas Manila is currently supporting at least 4,000 to 5,000 college scholars under the Caritas Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP).
The prelate expressed hope that the condition of some poor households will improve after one of their family members is able to graduate from college. This, he said, is the objective of YSLEP.
“In a few years you can actually see the effectiveness of the program and directly witness the improvement of a once impoverished family to a family with dignity and the means to lift themselves out of poverty,” he said.
