“CHED enjoins all higher education stakeholders, especially our schools, faculty, staff and students, to join hands and actively strive to end this culture of violence that continues to plague our institutions of higher learning,” CHED Chairman J. Prospero E. De Vera III said in a statement issued Thursday, March 2.
CHED issued the statement following the death of John Matthew T. Salilig, a third-year Chemical Engineering student of Adamson University who “recently fell victim to hazing.” As CHED offered its deepest condolences to the family of Salilig, the Commission said that will “remain steadfast in its unceasing efforts to rid our higher education institutions of hazing and all forms of senseless acts of violence.” CHED added that it will continue to strengthen efforts against violence in institutions of higher learning, especially with the Republic Act (RA) 11053 or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 in place. The RA 11053, CHED said, was passed into law in June 2018 to “strengthen the enforcement” of the Anti Hazing law. Meanwhile, CHED also welcomed the directive of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla ordering the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a parallel investigation on the case. “We urge the police to expedite its own investigation so the proper charges can be filed against the perpetrators,” De Vera added.
