CEBU CITY -- Take care of your heart.
The message came from no less than the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) as it spearheaded the 50th anniversary celebration of the Philippine Heart Month on Sunday, Feb. 26, at SM Seaside here.
Risk factor screenings, hands-on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and launching of the ‘Bawas Kilo, Bawat ‘Metro” walking workout were the highlights of the ‘Heart Fair.’
At least 400 representatives from various groups, including police officers and barangay health workers, took part in the activity.

“They are frontliners and we find it necessary for them to learn the advocacy of PHA,” said Dr. Leah Villamor, president of PHA-Cebu Chapter. The Heart Month is usually celebrated during the month of February. Last Sunday’s event was the first face-to-face Heart Month activity since the Covid-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020. “We celebrate Heart Month every year focusing on trying to improve cardiovascular care,” said Dr. Ronaldo Cuyco, PHA Vice President. “Remember, heart disease is the primary cause of death among Fiipinos….not just in Philippines but worldwide,” said Cuyco. Cuyco said the PHA is reaching out to the children to promote cardiovascular care. “The emphasis is to focus on the children. All of these risk factors start from childhood. We have to make sure that our children are more mobile, they exercise. We have that program as far as PHA is concerned,” Cuyco said. Cuyco said the PHA is ‘trying to convey the fact it's actually the cardio diseases that is the common cause of death.’ Cuyco said the PHA is also pushing for the Congress to come up with measures against smoking, alcoholism and anti-lipid. “All these risk factors should be addressed. If you compare mortality between cardiovascular and Covid, it is still cardio diseases which is the common cause of death,” Cuyco said. Cuyco said the PHA will continue to intensify its programs ‘with emphasis on the message that you should take care of your heart.’ “We are working with our chapters, we are not sitting down. We want to send a message that let’s give attention to these cardiovascular health and give focus to risk factors,” Cuyco said.
