Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John Uy welcomed the Bifrost Cable System project introduced by Converge ICT Solutions Inc. and Keppel Telecommunications and Transportation, saying it would “enable faster and better internet connectivity” in the Philippines.

“[This project] will open another data superhighway in the country that will enable the Philippines to get bigger bandwidth and faster internet connection,” said Uy on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Set to be finished in 2024, the undersea cable system will link the west coast of North America through Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and to Guam.

“We are excited by this welcome development as it will no doubt be integral as we move forward to the fourth industrial revolution where advances in technology such as in AI, robotics, the Internet of Things, and disruptive technologies rely heavily on connectivity,” Uy furthered.

All efforts of the private sector in hopes of ending the digital divide will be supported by the DICT, Uy added.
