Former vice president Leni Robredo on Saturday, Feb. 25, enjoined Filipinos to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the 1986 People Power revolt, which she said showed the world that the Philippines is capable of fighting for democracy peacefully.

In a statement posted on her official Twitter page, the former official and 2022 presidential candidate said the 1986 People Power wasn’t about the name or political color.

“Sa paggunita sa (In commemorating the) 1986 People Power Revolution, ating balikan ang diwa na naging inspirasyon sa daigdig noon. Labas sa kulay at apelyido, sumubaybay ang mundo sa tapang ng nagkakaisang taumbayan (let us look back at the spirit that became an inspiration to the world then. Far from it being about political color and names, the world was witness to the courage of a unified people),” she wrote.

“Naging tanglaw ang Pilipinas sa iba na magsimula ng kanilang makasaysayang paglaya (The Philippines became the model for all that started their own historic fight for freedom),” Robredo added.

Former senators Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan and Bam Aquino also posted their own messages about the historic EDSA revolution that toppled the 20-year dictatorship of former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

“Be mindful and know that history will judge us all. One day we will be asked: When thousands were being killed, billions stolen, and tens of thousands arrested - what were you doing?,” Pangilinan, who was Robredo’s running mate in the 2022 national election, wrote on his social media pages.

He asked everyone to keep the EDSA People Power spirit alive.

“Magtanong. Maghanap ng mga sagot. Makinig. Matuto. Maging mulat. Kumilos (Ask questions. Seek answers. Listen. Learn. Beware. Act),” the former senator stressed.

Aquino, the nephew of democracy icon former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., greeted Filipinos a “peaceful” commemoration of the revolution that his aunt-in-law, former president Corazon Aquino, led.

“Nakaukit sa puso ng bawat Pilipino ang malalim na pagmamahal natin sa ating bayan (It is engraved in the heart of every Filipino the deep love for our country),” he said.

Meanwhile, Angat Buhay Foundation, the non-profit organization founded by Robredo last year, stressed how bayanihan or communal spirit shows that the spirit of EDSA is still alive.

It emphasized how the challenge of fulfilling the promise of the EDSA People Power Revolution is still with all Filipinos.

“Hindi maaaring manatiling nakasulat lang sa history books ang diwa ng peaceful at bloodless revolution na hinangaan ng buong mundo. Dapat itong isabuhay at alalahanin ng bawat isa, lalo na ng nakababatang henerasyon (We cannot let the spirit of the peaceful and bloodless revolution that was admired by the whole world remain only written in history books. This needs to be kept alive and remembered by every one, especially the younger generation),” Angat Buhay said.

The statement added how the non-profit organization will continue to extend help to all, regardless of political color.

“Kasabay nito ang pag-asang darating ang araw na wala nang Pilipinong maiiwan sa laylayan at sama-sama tayong haharap sa maliwanag na bukas (This comes with the hope that there will come a day that there’ll be no Filipino left behind and we’ll be together to face a brighter future),” it furthered.
