Conduct of special elex for Cavite 7th district rep 'peaceful'—Comelec
The special election in the 7th district of Cavite on Saturday, Feb. 25, was generally peaceful, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia said that the majority of the over 355,000 registered voters in the said district were able to cast their votes to choose their new representative that was vacated by now Department of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.
“Overall naman yung paghohold natin ng special election sa ika-pitong distrito ay napakatahimik (the holding of the special election in the 7th district was very peaceful),” said Garcia in an interview on Saturday night.
The winning candidate is expected to be proclaimed by Sunday morning, Feb. 26, said Garcia.
“Hindi po ito lalagpas ng alas-10 ng umaga ay makakapagproklama tayo ng bagong kongresista ng ikapitong distrito ng Cavite (It won't be later than 10 a.m., we will be able to proclaim a new congressman for the seventh district of Cavite),” the poll chief said.
“Ngayong gabi hanggang mamayang madaling araw ay ang ating provincial board of canvassers ay tatanggap lang—may reception ng lahat ng results dito sa tatlong bayan at siyudad (Tonight until tomorrow morning, our provincial board of canvassers will be receiving [results) —there will be a reception of all the results in the three towns and city),” he added.
The poll chief was pertaining to the towns of Amadeo, Indang, and Tanza, and the city of Trece Martires.
Garcia said that the winning candidate can immediately assume the post after he takes his oath of office.
“Pagkatapos na pagkatapos na mabigyan siya ng certificate of proclamation ng ating board of canvassers ay kaagad pupuwede siyang makapanumpa na kahit na sinong otorisado na magadminister ng oath (After he is given a certificate of proclamation by our board of canvassers, he will immediately be able to take an oath from anyone authorized to administer an oath),” he said.
“Kahit na sa Lunes, pwede na siyang mag assume ng kanyang position bilang representate ng ikapitong distrito ng Cavite (He can assume his position on Monday as the representative of the 7th district of Cavite),” he added.
The candidates for the said position are the justice secretary’s son Crispin Diego Remulla of the National Unity Party as well as independent candidates Melencio Loyola de Sagun Jr., Jose Angelito Domingo Aguinaldo, and Michael Angelo Bautista Santos.
