Scout Ranger killed, colleague wounded in Basilan ambush

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A Scout Ranger was killed while his colleague was wounded in an ambush in Sumisip, Basilan on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The fatality was identified as a certain Staff Sgt. de Jesus while Staff Sgt. Roby Gallo Balbuena, 32, was wounded in the incident. 

Both are assigned to the 14th Scout Ranger Company, 5th Scout Ranger Battalion, First Scout Ranger Regiment in Sumisip.

Police investigation revealed that they were on board a motorcycle on their way to their camp on the main highway in Barangay Mebak when the still unidentified gunmen fired at them.

De Jesus died on the spot while Balbuena sustained bullet wounds and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

He was transported to a private hospital in Zamboanga City.
