Lanao del Sur governor ambushed, four companions killed

ILIGAN CITY -- Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal 'Bombit' Alonto Adiong Jr. and his convoy were ambushed in Barangay Dilimbayan, Maguing, Lanao del Sur along Cagayan de Oro-Camp Kibaritan road on their way to Municipality of Wao, around 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17.

Brigadier General John Guyguyon, police regional director for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), in a sketchy report said Governor Adiong sustained gunshot wound at his right waist while one of his aid Ali Tabao was hit on his feet.

Victims were brought to Kalilangan Hospital in Bukidnon for medication.

Governor Adiong and party came from Marawi City and were going to Wao LDS. After passing a rough road in Maguing, the perpetrators of undetermined number opened fire on them.

The report from the Kalilangan Municipal Police said four of the governor’s companions were killed. They were Juraij Adiong, Aga Sumandar, Jalil Cosain and Kobi, the driver.

Meanwhile, Lanao del Sur first district representative Zia Alonto Adiong in a statement said:

"Our unending gratitude to everyone who has offered their prayers and support to Gov. Bombit and our family during this difficult time. Through the grace of Allah (SWT), Gov. Bombit is in very stable condition. The worst has passed. He’s out of danger", Zia said.

"We are heartbroken over the deaths of his security guards, all of whom are family members who were with my brother during the violent attack. We offer our deepest sympathies to all of our bereaved loved ones.

“We implore the authorities to act with urgency and utilize all legal means available to pursue and bring the perpetrators to justice. This condemnable act must not be taken lightly,” said Adiong.

May peace prevail in our beloved Lanao del Sur, he further stated.
