Two NPA rebels killed, weapons recovered in two encounters in Cagayan

CAMP MELCHOR F DELA CRUZ, Upi, Gamu, Isabela -- The 5th Infantry Division (5ID) and the Provincial Task Force-End Local Communist Armed Conflict (PTF-ELCAC) of Cagayan reported the death of two terrorist group members after two encounters in Barangay Sta. Margarita, Baggao, Cagayan, on Monday, Feb. 13.

The 17th Infantry Battalion was patrolling in the forested area of Barangay Sta. Margarita when they clashed with approximately 15 rebels believed to be members of the Cagayan Provincial Committee-Regional Committee-Cagayan Valley.

The encounter lasted for over 30 minutes, resulting in the death of one NPA and recovery of an M16A1 with a magazine.

The rebels immediately fled.

In the ensuing pursuit operation, the troops belonging to the 17th Infantry Battalion were able to track down the rebels. For the second time, a clash lasting for about 15 minutes erupted.

Another member of the terrorist group was killed and a Bushmaster rifle with a magazine was recovered.

Meanwhile, authorities encouraged remaining members of the terrorist group to return to the government.
