Helper dies, 5 hurt in Negros smash-up


BACOLOD CITY – A 19-year-old helper died while five others were injured in a collision between a refrigerated van and a dump truck loaded with sand in Barangay 5, Victorias City, Negros Occidental on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Police identified the fatality as Jun Jun Milleza, 19, of Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.

Staff Sgt. Fredrick John Muñoz, traffic investigator of the Victorias City Police Station, said that van driver Gimbo Escordial, 40, of Cadiz City, reportedly lost control of his vehicle.

The van swerved, fell on its side, skidded, and crashed into a dump truck in the opposite lane, Muñoz said.

Escordial and Milleza, his helper, were injured and taken to a hospital. Milleza died in the hospital while Escordial is recuperating in a medical facility here.

Dump truck driver Francis Poral, 48, of Victorias City, and his assistants, Ireneo Demapanag, 29; Jun Art Advincula, 25, and Jilson Morgiya, 19, residents of E.B. Magalona, Negros Occidental, sustained minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital.

Poral is detained at the police station and will be released if no charges will be filed against him within the 18-hour reglementary detention.
