By 2030, Basic Education schools of the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) will start implementing the full co-education scheme.
In a memorandum signed by President Roberto C. Yap SJ on Friday, Feb. 10, he announced that the Board of Trustees approved the full implementation of a co-education scheme in the Basic Education schools by School Year 2029-2030 during a meeting held on Feb. 4.
This move, he explained, is in “response to our goal in the Lux-in-Domino Strategic Plan: Strategic targeted growth in the university’s student population to increase access to and impact of the Ateneo de Manila education.”
Specifically, Yap said that the strategy aims to “increase student diversity by granting female students access” to the Ateneo de Manila basic education schools.
Related to this, Yap stressed that “much work is needed” to prepare the Basic Education schools for this “milestone decision.”
Yap noted that the implementation plan includes a preparatory year beginning SY 2023 to 024.
“Co-ed admission will begin in SY 2024-2025 for Kinder, Grade 1 and Grade 7 levels,” he added.
Yap said that the Vice President for Basic Education has been tasked to put together the communication plan, facilities, and infrastructure requirements, as well as the academic, formation, and capability development aspects of the co-ed scheme.
This action of the Board, he added, concludes the six-month study and consultation conducted by the project team composed of Fr. Joaquin Jose Mari C. Sumpaico III, SJ (Team Lead); Dr. Jaime Jose G. Nicdao (Co-team Lead); Dr. Maria Regina M. Hechanova; Dr. Helen U. Amante; Maria Rosario R. Arespacochaga; Rosanna M. Borja; and Paula M. Quodala
“We thank them for their dedication and generosity in preparing a thorough and comprehensive work,” Yap said.
“I now enjoin the community to pray for the smooth implementation of a full co-education in the Basic Education,” he added.
