'Be aware, promote rights of persons afflicted with down syndrome -- CHR

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has enjoined the observance of National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month this February by calling on all Filipinos to raise awareness and help promote the rights of those who have the genetic disorder.

The National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month is celebrated by virtue of Proclamation No. 157 issued in 2002 by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The proclamation aims to give due attention to the realities and unique abilities of Filipinos living with Down Syndrome.

Google says down syndrome “varies in severity among individuals, causing lifelong intellectual disability and developmental delays.”

It also said: “Down syndrome is the most common genetic chromosomal disorder and cause of learning disabilities in children. It also commonly causes other medical abnormalities, including heart and gastrointestinal disorders.”

In a statement, the CHR said that “through adequate and appropriate support according to individual needs, people with Down Syndrome have the capacity to lead a normal and fulfilling life.”

"CHR enjoins everyone to amplify their right to special education, right to health, and right to equal opportunities and treatment," it said.

It pointed out that it is crucial for members of society to learn more about Down Syndrome so that they could create a "more inclusive society" that can protect their rights and dignity.
