Malabon gov’t mourns with family of former city mayor


Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval and other city government officials have condoled with the family of former city mayor Maynardo Espiritu who passed away on Feb. 6.

Mayor Sandoval and her husband, former City Representative Ricky Sandoval, attended on Tuesday, Feb. 7, the wake of Espiritu, 90 (August 1932- Feb 2023), at the Our Lady of Fatima Chapel in the city.

“Tayo po ay nag-alay ng panalangin dito sa Our Lady of Fatima Chapel para sa pagpanaw ni dating Malabon City Mayor Maynardo Espiritu. Kasabay po nito ang paghahandog natin ng watawat bilang pagpupugay sa kanyang napakahusay na serbisyo noong siya ay nakaupo bilang Punong Lungsod (We offered prayers here at Our Lady of Fatima Chapel for the passing of former Malabon City Mayor Maynardo Espiritu. At the same time, we offered a flag in tribute to his excellent service when he was sitting as city mayor),” Sandoval said in a Facebook post.

“Sa pamilya ni former Mayor Espiritu, nawa'y gabayan po kayo ng Maykapal at bigyan ng lakas sa panahong ito. Kami po ay taos-pusong nakikiramay sa inyo (To the family of former Mayor Espiritu, may God guide you and give you strength during this time. We sincerely sympathize with you),” she added.

Espiritu served as Malabon’s local chief executive from 1972 to 1986.

Malabon City Vice Mayor Ninong dela Cruz, City Representative Jaye Lacson Noel, Rotary Club of Malabon, the Barangay Hulong Duhat and city residents also expressed their condolences to the family and relatives of the former mayor.

“Though he may not be with us anymore, we will surely remember him as a leader and a true public servant who made his mark in the lives of the people he served,” Dela Cruz said.

Sandoval said that the remains of Espiritu will be cremated on Friday, Feb. 10.
