The Philippine National Police-Chaplain Service paid tribute to the memory of the 44 fallen troopers of the PNP Special Action Force as it marked the 8th anniversary of the Mamasapano encounter.

PNP-Chaplain Service Director Police Brigadier General Monsignor Jason Ortizo called on Filipinos to always remember the heroism and love for country of SAF 44 who serve as an inspiration not only for the members of the police force but for all Filipinos.

“I am calling on my fellow Filipinos. Let us commemorate and honor the memory of SAF 44. Let us remember what they have done for the country. This is not only to inspire every soldier or policeman but every Filipino for their heroism and love for country,” Ortizo said.

“Although remembering SAF 44 brings sad memories, let us focus on the inspiration that they have given us. They offered their lives for the country,” he added.

Ortizo said the Police Regional Office 8 in Palo, Leyte initiated a Day of National Remembrance for the Heroic Sacrifice of SAF 44 and offered prayers for the eternal repose of their souls as well as for the loved ones that they have left behind.

The theme for the event was “Legacy of Heroes: Inspiration of Future Generations,” which Ortizo said is meant to inspire the youth to serve and love their country.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte through Proclamation No. 164 declared Jan. 25 of every year as a National Day of Remembrance of honor of the fallen members of SAF 44.
