
TACLOBAN CITY – The city government of Calbayog and the local government units of Gandara, Basey, and San Jorge in Samar have declared a state of calamity due to the damage caused by the shear line and low-pressure area (LPA) affecting Eastern Visayas this week.
Based on initial reports, a total of 9,941 families or 39,876 individuals have evacuated due to severe flooding and heavy rains in the province.
A total of 14 houses were partially damaged while four houses have been totally damaged, including three government structures, with an estimated cost of P1 million.
Some 13 houses from Barangay Palencia, Tarangnan town were also affected by a landslide, forcing families to evacuate.
As of Jan. 13, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMO) reported that 4,394.1 hectares of rice field, 518.5 hectares of vegetables, and 10.44 hectares of root crops have been damaged by over a week of heavy rainfall.
