Tunneling work on the P488.5-billion Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) started Monday, Jan. 9, as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the launch of the first of six tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the subway's depot in Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela City.

This is the "point of no return" for the ‘Project of the Century’, declared Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista.

"We are going full speed ahead to complete the Philippine's first subway system," he maintained.

Once fully operational, the MMSP will serve 519,000 passengers daily and shorten travel time between Quezon City and Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from one hour and 30 minutes to 35 minutes.

With a total length of 33 kilometers from Valenzuela City to Pasay City, the MMSP construction is also projected to generate 18,000 jobs and boost economic activities of communities in Metro Manila.
