Lagman reacts to Remulla son's acquittal--and he's not thrilled

Independent minority solon Albay 1st district Rep. Edcel Lagman has slammed the "swift" acquittal of Juanito Jose Remulla III, son of Department of Justice (DOJ) Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla, on charged of illegal drug possession.

The acquittal was rendered by a Las Pinas City court on Friday, Jan. 6.

“It is grossly unfortunate that the exoneration of a Remulla scion was swift but the liberation of former Sen. Leila de Lima is stranded in the dark tunnel of injustice," Lagman said on a terse statement.

The opposition lawmaker and Liberal Party (LP) president was referring to the case of De Lima, who has been in prison since 2017 over alleged links to the illegal drug trade in the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP).

Ironically, De Lima, who is currently being held at the Philippine National Police (PNP) custodial center in Camp Crame, is a former DOJ secretary herself.

On Oct. 8, 2022, the former senator survived an attempted hostage taking inside Camp Crame. The alleged perpetrators were incarcerated members of terror group Abu Sayyaf.

Camp Crame is the headquarters of the national police force.
