PH chessers win team event in Hong Kong tourney


Filipino woodpushers bagged the top honors in the team event of the Hong Kong Bauhinia U18 Chess Invitational held recently.

Filipino woodpushers won the team event of the recent Hong Kong Bauhinia U18 Chess Invitational.

The team, which is composed of Mark Jay Bacojo, Ayana Nicole Usman and Alexandra Sydney Paez, prevailed over rivals from Malaysia, Korea and Hong Kong.

Bacojo, likewise, came through with two runner-up finishes for Team PH.

He finished behind eventual winner Wong Yen-Hsiu Elliot in the individual competition of the main event, and settled behind Korea’s Huh Isaak in the individual blitz bowl.

Organized by the Hong Kong Chess Federation, the tournament featured 22 junior players aged 10 to 17 years old from Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and host Hong Kong.

It was divided into two parts: the main event (Standard Chess) and the friendly competition (Blitz Bowl).
