“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” the 73-year-old new king said in a statement. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

As we bid farewell to the Queen, we’ve listed down things you might not know about Britain's longest-serving monarch.

The Queen’s reign in Britain

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in Britain, held the crown for 70 years and 214 days. She acceded to the throne on Feb. 6, 1952, after her father King George VI died. Today, she is the second-longest-serving monarch in history behind 17th-century French King Louis XIV, with a reign lasting for 72 years and 110 days, according to Bloomberg.

The Queen’s romance

Queen Elizabeth II’s love story with Prince Philip (who died in 2021) began in 1939. They got married in Westminster Abbey in 1947 and had four children—Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward.

The Queen’s daily meal

In his book, “Eating Royally: Recipes and Remembrances from a Palace Kitchen,” former Buckingham Palace chef Darren McGrady shared the Queen’s daily meals and favorite dishes. Her Majesty (HM) remained faithful to her meal plan for over nine decades, as per Marie Claire. It included a bowl of Special K cereal and a cup of Earl Grey tea for breakfast, grilled fish or chicken with an occasional serving of gin cocktail and chocolate, and a “jam penny” sandwich made of bread, strawberry jam, and butter.

The Queen’s love for corgi dogs

Apart from horses, the Queen was known for her great adoration for corgi dogs. According to Fox News, HM owned more than 30 corgis. She loved corgis since she was nine. But it was Susan, a present given to her by her father on her 18th birthday, that started her collection of the dog breed.

The Queen graced fashion week for the first time

In 2018, the Queen shocked the fashion crowd in London when she attended British designer Richard Quinn’s show during fashion week. She sat on the front row next to long-time American Vogue magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

The Queen honoring Filipinos

Queen Elizabeth didn’t get the chance to visit the Philippines but she did acknowledge the contribution of some Filipinos during her reign. In 2019, the Queen awarded Filipino driver Roland Quitevis with the British Empire Medal for his 33 years of service at the UK Embassy in Manila. Last year, she recognized the works of Filipino nurses in UK’s health sector. And in 2022, Queen Elizabeth II presented the George Cross to May Parsons, who represented the National Health Service England. Parsons is the Filipino nurse who first administered the COVID-19 vaccine jab in the world, according to a previous report by the Manila Bulletin

Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth II.
